How Pip Value Works
A pip is the smallest standard price movement in a currency pair. For most pairs it is 0.0001; for JPY pairs it is 0.01; for Gold (XAUUSD) it is 0.01.
The pip value tells you exactly how much money you gain or lose per pip of movement, based on your lot size:
- Formula: Pip Value = (Pip Size × Units) ÷ Exchange Rate
- Standard Lot (1.00) = 100,000 units
- Mini Lot (0.10) = 10,000 units
- Micro Lot (0.01) = 1,000 units
Example — EURUSD at 1 standard lot: 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10 per pip.
Common Pip Values (USD Account, Standard Lot)
| Pair | Pip Size | Pip Value |
|---|---|---|
| EURUSD | 0.0001 | $10.00 |
| GBPUSD | 0.0001 | $10.00 |
| AUDUSD | 0.0001 | $10.00 |
| USDJPY | 0.01 | ~$6.70 |
| USDCAD | 0.0001 | ~$7.30 |
| USDCHF | 0.0001 | ~$11.20 |
| XAUUSD (Gold) | 0.01 | $1.00 |
Use Pip Value with Position Sizing
Pip value is the essential input for calculating the correct lot size. Once you know the pip value, use it in the position sizing formula:
Lot Size = Risk Amount ÷ (Stop Loss pips × Pip Value per lot)
